The War As They Knew It

During the first and second world wars, our country and its allies came together to help the fighting men obtain freedom and civility for mankind. There were so many aspects of everyday life that went into making it possible, and every little bit helped. From rationing to nursing, and to working in defense plants and knitting socks, men and women all did their bit to help with the war effort. Even children were expected to pitch in. During the first world war school children (boys and girls) were taught how to knit for the troops, even if it was just afghan square to be made into blankets. Women saved cooking fats to give to their grocers to be made into glycerin, which was used to make bombs. Americans had it comparatively easy compared to their British allies, who dealt with nearly daily bombings and much more strict rationing that actually lasted until 1954--- 9 years after the war ended.
